The well-equipped genealogist, amateur or professional, keeps records using a genealogy “program”—a database in which to record and report on everything known about everybody of interest. Family Tree Maker, advertised as the world’s top selling genealogy software, has gone through many phases and ownerships since its creation in 1989. Now under the Ancestry.com umbrella, its popularity with both PC and Mac users continues.

Pursuing Your Roots With RootsMagic by Jean and Butch Hibbens - Wednesday, September 16, 20157/15/2015 Jean Wilcox Hibben and Lynn A. “Butch” Hibben have been involved in family research for many years and are dedicated users of—and experts on--the popular RootsMagic genealogy software package. Jean is a member of numerous national, state and local genealogical organizations, including the Southern California Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and maintains her own website at www.circlemending.org. A Board-Certified genealogist, Jean is the Director of the Corona California Family History Center and was the lead researcher for the PBS television program Genealogy Roadshow. She holds a masters degree in speech communication and doctorate in folklore. Jean is a national speaker, known for her entertaining and informative presentations and is a frequent writer for various genealogy publications. Jean’s husband, “Butch” Hibben, became interested in family history when he took a typing class to help his grandmother type family group sheets and pedigree charts for the family's Book of Remembrance. Fortunate to speak with his forebears about their experiences as Arizona pioneers, Butch has remembered the stories and his family’s role in the history of Utah and Arizona. Like his pioneer ancestors, Butch was a trailblazer --but in the field of computers: initially with the U.S. Navy in the late 1950s, and later as a civilian computer technician until his retirement in 2008. He serves as Assistant Director of the Corona Family History Center and is also an audio technician and plays saw and spoons. Joseph Leavitt is the Family History Committee Chairman and Genealogical Database Manager for the Western Association of Leavitt Families (www.leavittfamilies.org). His retirement from a 37-year career with IBM in 2002 allows him time to assist the many patrons of the Orange County FamilySearch Library. You will find him there on Wednesday mornings from 9 AM to 1 PM, and on Friday afternoons from 1 PM to 5 PM. Mr. Leavitt has written many instructional articles and taught numerous classes on the use of genealogy records management programs and related utilities. He favors the Legacy Family Tree genealogy program, and will be presenting helpful information about this program for the genealogist now evaluating software, as well as both novice and experienced users. |
